The Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning at the University is focused on the built environment and uses methods of architecture, design, planning, science, art, engineering, IT, and social sciences to analyse, understand and design innovative environments.

This fellowship has been established through the generosity of the estate of the late Ian Buchan Fell, and the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning. Ian Buchan Fell, who died in 1961, left the income from his estate to the University for the promotion and encouragement of education, and the establishment of this fellowship will honour Mr Fell’s passion and interest in housing research.

In this role  you will pursue an agenda focused on housing, and the needs of people relative to their housing. These needs are related to the complex interactions between people, their housing and other aspects of the built environment, including but not limited to related issues such as economic and community development. The Ian Fell Housing Research Fellowship has been established to further research in this important area.

You will also have the opportunity to work with a dynamic group of established and early career researchers in our research groups and labs including the Urban Housing Lab, the Innovation in Applied Design Lab, Indoor Environmental Quality Lab, Design Lab. 

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding, independent, early career researcher with a strong publication record relative to opportunity.

You will be responsible for:

• Research or Design Research on a significant and socially beneficial research project in the area of housing, and in particular, the nexus between social issues and housing design
• preparing and presenting research outcomes in journal papers and conferences and, as appropriate, peer reviewable designs
• managing a research project budget of $25,000
• preparing research grant applications
• collaborating with staff to contribute to the Faculty’s research agenda
• a minor coursework teaching role.

Application process

To apply for this role you will need:

• a PhD award dated no earlier than 1 May 2011 and no later than 30 April 2016.  Important note: Applicants with a PhD award dated later than 30 April 2015 are extremely unlikely to be competitive and should talk to the Faculty’s Associate Dean (Research) to assess competitiveness before applying.

• a research plan detailing your proposed significant and socially beneficial research project in the area of housing, and in particular, the nexus between social issues and housing design. This plan must be no more than three (3) pages describing the proposed research project and including the following points:

• Title of the project
• Aims and significance
• Research plan, methods and techniques
• Budget outline (the budget should contain a plan for sourcing additional funds)

• A CV (as an attachment to your online application) including details of your research track record (more information on the necessary format is included in the position’s online application form which is accessed from the University’s career website link below):

• experience in publishing research both collaboratively and independently, and presenting at conferences and seminars.

• proven ability to communicate research objectives and outcomes to stakeholders, including industry and government sector

• experience in the management of funded research projects.
