The Save Sight Institute was established in 1985 and has grown to be one of the top three ophthalmic research institutes in Australia. It is internationally recognised as a centre of innovative research into ophthalmology and as a centre of excellence for clinical research, learning and teaching. Ophthalmology is a highly specialised area of clinical medicine and science and the Save Sight Institute has gathered together a critical mass of clinicians, researchers, equipment and technology which is unique within the University of Sydney.

The Fight Retinal Blindness project has established a system of national ongoing prospective audit of the outcomes of the emerging treatments for macular disease using a purpose written, web based software system and other novel data collection strategies.

We are currently seeking a Bio Statistician/ Data Analyst who will undertake the scientific, statistical and analytical aspects of the project to ensure achievement of project outcomes under direction of the Chief Investigator. This position will cover a period of parental leave currently filled at an academic level, and as such, an academic appointment may be considered.

You will require:

• degree or equivalent in statistics, biostatistics, health information management in a science or related field
• training in research methods
• demonstrated experience using statistical analysis software, preferably R, and/or SPlus or similar
• ability to verify, clean and analyse data and extract information from a database using both simple and complex queries
• sound organisational skills and ability to manage conflicting priorities
• ability to work both independently and as part of a team
• sound communication skills both written and oral
• demonstrated experience with database query writing and reporting
• demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office; familiarity with Windows
• demonstrated experience writing complex analytical reports and papers
• demonstrated experience in design of health research projects
• working knowledge of, and commitment to, State and Federal privacy legislation with regard to database security and management of confidential information.

Desirable:

• familiarity with quality assurance activities including performance benchmarking
• familiarity with ophthalmology or eye health information management
• familiarity with SQL
• knowledge of /experience working with Clinical Audits/Registries
