We are seeking to appoint an Associate Dean (Research) to lead research and research development in the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery (Sydney Nursing School) in collaboration with the Dean and Faculty Executive. The Associate Dean (Research) will provide strategic and operational direction and manage all research related matters and activities.

The focus of the role is to create an environment that promotes innovation and supports research initiatives aligned to University and faculty strategic priorities. The Associate Dean (Research) will support academic staff and students to achieve excellence in research, achieve successful research outcomes and maximize research impact. Evidence of success in this endeavour is determined by Australia’s national measure of research quality (Excellence in Research for Australia or ERA) – encompassing traditional research outputs such as competitive grant funding and quality publications, as well as international recognition of research impact and translation within the health sector.

In collaboration with the DVC (Research) and Research Portfolios of the University, the Associate Dean (Research) identifies and fosters links between local, national and international research partners and organisations. The Associate Dean (Research) also identifies areas of research strength to enhance the research profile of the faculty, the health divisions and the University and to facilitate higher degree research (HDR) student recruitment.

As a senior leadership role, the position contributes to the Faculty Executive on future planning and broader strategic matters. The role demands strong advocacy and representation of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery, the Divisions of Health and the University of Sydney, through membership of internal and external committees and in international, community, higher education and professional forums.

This position provides leadership to other academics in research development, research ethics, research funding, project management and publication, and facilitates access to research support and development opportunities both within and outside the University. The Associate Dean (Research) will lead and play a key role in enhancing research capability and supporting high quality research collaboration.

To be successful, you will bring to the role a recognised research profile within a specialist area of nursing, midwifery or health.  This will include a research based doctorate, a strong and influential record of published works of impact, a record of successful grant applications and a significant contribution to fostering research and development activities within an academic environment and/or the professions. You will have skills in academic management, including experience in staff supervision and the ability to encourage the development of staff. You will also possess a demonstrated record in leading research training including the development of seminar and workshop programs for critical debate and discussion of research approaches, supervision of post graduate research students and will have made a significant contribution to policy debates on research.

TERM

The role of Associate Dean (Research) is for a fixed term of three years renewable.  At the conclusion of the term, the appointee will revert to a continuing substantive position in the faculty as Associate Professor of Nursing.
