The Opportunity
We have an exciting opportunity for a Fruit Fly Entomologist to be part of our South Australian Research and Development Institute Division within Primary Industry and Regions SA. The role reports to Program Manager, Entomology.

The Fruit Fly Entomologist works within the Entomology Program, Crop Sciences workgroup within SARDI to conduct research and provide professional technical advice relating to improving the efficiency and efficacy of fruit fly exclusion and eradication programs in South Australia. In this capacity, the role requires working closely in conjunction with PIRSA, Biosecurity SA Plant Health Operations team.  The Fruit Fly Entomologist will provide advice to PIRSA during and outside fruit fly outbreaks and eradication programs, according to requests for technical support on fruit fly and other invertebrate Biosecurity policy matters. The role also represents South Australia on technical matters related to fruit fly nationally, including representing South Australia on the Australian Fruit Fly Technical Advisory Committee,

The Fruit Fly Entomologist is responsible for undertaking research on the management of fruit fly in South Australia, ensuring that the research findings from their work are communicated to industry in an effective and timely manner.

Essential Qualifications

The applicant must have a Bachelor Degree in Science or Agricultural Science

Special Conditions

  • This is a full time contract / term vacancy up until 31/12/2020
  • Interstate and intrastate travel and out of hours work, weekend and public holidays travel will be required.
  • A current Class C drivers licence is essential.
  • Use of common agriculture chemicals is required and a Chemcert chemical handler’s certificate or a willingness to obtain one is essential.
  • Involves field work and exposure to dust and pollen.
  • Research track record in entomology, particularly fruit fly, will be highly regarded
