Located at UTS, the Australian Centre of Excellence for Local Government promotes a cooperative approach to local government education, research and development; urban policy, metropolitan and regional governance, and has close ties with local government, local government associations, professional institutes, and academic bodies in Australia, the Asia-Pacific and globally.

The Centre's activities are diverse and include:

  • A suite of formal educational programs, including a PhD program, Local Government Master's degree, a Graduate Diploma in Local Government Management, a Graduate Certificate in Local Government Leadership, and a Graduate Certificate in Development Assessment.
  • Professional development programs for local government and associated professionals
  • Public policy research and education
  • Academic and applied research into various aspects of local government, urban, regional and remote studies, intergovernmental relations, and metropolitan governance
  • Specialist consultancy services for councils, state and federal agencies, and international programs and projects.

Detailed Description

The appointee to this position will be required to convene and deliver local government studies programs at postgraduate level, including development and delivery of courses and subjects in interrelated postgraduate courses, and contributing to the ongoing development of ACELG's teaching program. As well as teaching, the appointee will be expected to have an active research agenda, including publications in leading refereed journals, as well as the capacity to write industry relevant publications.

The appointee will need demonstrated high level practice-based teaching skills, along with the desire to make a strong contribution to building the collegiate culture of the Centre and to build the teaching and academic capacity of others.

Main areas that will need to be addressed in applications for this position will include, but not be limited to:

  • Extensive knowledge of local government practice and theory sufficient to teach postgraduate level subjects and to potentially supervise higher degree research students
  • An understanding of, and ability to apply the principles and practices of effective teaching and flexible learning to adult learners in varied modes of delivery
  • Evidence of a capacity to undertake high quality research and publish in leading refereed journals
  • An enthusiasm for research, teaching and service.

Remuneration

Salary Range: $92,755 to $125,988

The university offers 17% employer provided superannuation and salary packaging opportunities. This is a continuing appointment.
