Dr Greg Ayers has announced his resignation as the Director of the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) following ongoing health issues.

The Federal Government has officially thanked Dr Ayers for the ‘major national and international’ contributions he has made to the area over his career.

“As an atmospheric scientist of international renown, Dr Ayers has ensured that the Bureau has not only risen to these challenges but has continued to improve its delivery of meteorological, climate and other scientific information,” Parliamentary Secretary for Sustainability and Urban Water Senator Don Farrell said.

Before his appointment as Director of Meteorology in March 2009, Dr Ayers was Chief of CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research after serving as Chief of Atmospheric Research from 2002.

Dr Rob Vertessy, Deputy Director of the Bureau (Climate and Water), will continue to act as Director while the Australian Government seeks to fill the vacancy created by Dr Ayers’ resignation.
